Decimal Place Value Aids

Do your students struggle to remember when zeros have no purpose? Try this activity. Print the template above and have students write digits in a pointy new pencil. Then, have them fill in extra zeros with a dull crayon. Explain that only zeros between largest whole number and the decimal point, or the smallest part and the decimal point, are relevant. All other zeros are “pointless” in the sense that they don’t change the value of the number (but are helpful for lining up numbers properly).
