Garden of Gethsemane

After finishing their Passover dinner, Jesus and His disciples went to the Mount of Olives, outside the city. There was a garden, called Gethsemane, on the hill.

“Sit here while I go over there and pray,” Jesus told them.

Jesus felt overwhelmed with emotion. He was so sad His whole body hurt from it. He asked Peter, James and John to come a little further with Him as He found just the right spot to pray. He told them, “I’m so sad I feel like I’m dying. Stay by Me so we can all stay awake together.”

Jesus walked another minute as they sat down on the grass. He got down on His knees and poured out His heart to God the Father.

“Please Father, if there is a way to rescue people without suffering, let Me do that instead. But I will do Your will. Whatever You choose!”

He walked back to the three disciples and found that they had fallen asleep.

When Judas had gone to get the priests, he told them to arrest the man he greeted with a kiss on the cheek.

Jesus and the other disciples watched as Judas walked up to them, surrounded by an angry group of people, carrying swords and torches.

“Rabbi!” Judas called out to Jesus and greeted Him with a kiss on the cheek.

“Why are you doing this?” Jesus asked him, shaking His head with disappointment as the men grabbed Him.

Peter leaped to his feet when he saw that Jesus was being arrested. He grabbed a sword and cut off one of the men’s ears.

“Put that away!” Jesus called to Peter. “Violence is not how we do things. Don’t you know that If I asked for it, My Father would send down twelve armies of angels? But the prophecies must happen as they were written.”

Then Jesus put His hand over the man’s ear and it reattached and he could hear again.

Then Jesus turned to the crowd of angry people, shouting and waving their weapons in the air.

“Really?” He asked them. “You come for Me in the middle of the night, when I’ve been teaching in the temple every day in front of everyone? But it was My Father’s will for it to happen this way so people would know that the words of the prophets were true.”

They took Jesus away, and all of His disciples ran away in fear.
